I received an E-mail from my provider that states they are currently issuing a bandwidth cap due to anyone using bell or it's sub companies. I currently use a 7mbit/s connection, and the bandwidth cap was set to 25gb/m. Here, I'll let you guys do some reading.
As you may have heard, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has recently approved Bell Canada’s request to introduce Usage Based Billing on wholesale Internet services.
The CRTC’s decision directly affects the High-Speed Internet service provided to you by XXXXXX XXXXXX and, unfortunately, the newly associated costs to XXXXXX make the unlimited Internet service you are now enjoying no longer financially viable. This serves as 30 days notice that beginning February 1, 2011 there will be changes to your Internet service provided by xxxxxx.
As a result, the following changes will apply commencing your February invoice:
* Your existing High Speed Internet plan will now have 25GB of monthly usage included
* For the minority of customers who exceed this amount, additional usage up to 300GB will be charged at $2.00/GB to a maximum of $60.00/month. Usage in excess of 300GB per month will be charged an additional $1.10/GB
* Additional Usage Plans can be purchased starting at $5/month for an additional 40GB
Your XXXXXX High Speed Internet service usage during the month of November 2010 was:
208.5 GB
You can check your monthly Internet usage and buy additional usage, by visiting: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
For more information, please visit XXXXXXXXX or call XXXXXXXXXXX.
Thank you for your understanding and for choosing XXXXXX.
Sincerely,
XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX
CRTC green lights usage-based internet billing
Lets just do some math... 183gb - 30gb = 153gb + 60$, 153gb X 1.10$ = 168.3$ + 60$ =
228.3$
(This is in addition of a monthly charge.) |

Thats sucks. I'm guessing its somehow legal though.
I mean if you signed a contract for a specific plan, then maybe theres some small print saying they have the right to change it as they see fit.
But if there aint something along those lines written into it, then maybe you can challenge it, and say they are breaching the contract you signed?
Then again maybe you have to change as scott said.
Best of luck |

The thing that scares me is... What if this is just another act in the fight against piracy?
I can see this being motivated by 1 thing. Greed. Now either the greed is basic and they just want more money and are doing it through bandwidth caps, or the CRTC is seeing this as a way to make money off all the free downloads of their tv shows and music, and are making the free downloads not so free anymore. |

Exactly. Is it only bell, the most greedy company in Canada well besides the government that is doing this with thier internet? They just try to squeeze every nickel out of their customers, glad I dumped them years ago. |

I've been looking for alternatives. Shaw, Rogers, and their sub companies don't offer unlimited. Telus isn't available in my area... If anyone knows of a good company in Ontario, please let me know. |

Sympatico is bell, rogers has a cap at 60 gigs. If you're using 208 gigs a month, i would try to figure out what you're downloading or uploading that causes such a high number. 208 gigs could be several things like you have your own server, your own porn site, downloading or uploading things you don't really need and the last which caught me once was an email virus that was sending out tons of crap through my computer. You can't fight the caps , Ive tried. This was approved by the CRTC so all companies will look to profit by the new ruling. You might want to try a small company that doesn't have a cap yet , maybe Primus or Storm. |

200gigs doesnt seem like all that much tho, especially if you download a bunch of movies and a couple games each month (1 game i play regularly online), 200 just seems like a pretty average amount, not overly high. |

An average of 7 gigs a day isn't high? Sounds to me like this was a needed restriction then lol. Am i only the only one who thinks its fair that people who download 2 dvds of data per day over the net should indeed pay more? 5/40gigs on top of regular usage seems fine to me. |

Totally agree with you, 7 gigs is like 8 to 9 movies a day or 1 game a day. You have to be downloading/uploading non-stop, watching porn , wearing your pj's in your parent's basement, eating bagel bites while listening to Iron Maiden. Like Cripes! man , get a life. |

depends on how it is counted also.comcast for example counts up and down in they're usage limit.a few decent size mkv and you can easily hit their limit of 250GB a month.think i'm around 243GB today. |

Uploading is still bandwith usage, so it should be included, if people want to download countless HD .mkv files they should rightly be paying more than the average user. Extra bandwidth starts at $5/40gigs, that sounds fair to me. |
