I like the action - that's what peaks my interest right away. Not too concerned with director etc as I believe some very good directors have made some very not so good movies...every one has a bad day once in a while. Yep I find the action parts grab my attention right away. If I'm watching an action movie I really don't want the action to stop so that character development can occur, not why I'm watching it. Let's keep the dpm's (deaths per minute) the explosions and the automatic weapon fire happening...I tend to nod off if they stop.
That is not to say that I don't like a more in depth or cerebral movies as well, but typically the action grabs my attention. As many have said, it really does depend on the mood.

I missed this thread.....must have had me eyes closed.
1st point for me is chatter by others about a movie.
2nd point would be the actor. If it has Anthony Hopkins I want to see it regardless.
3rd would be director.....Ridley Scott as number 1 on my preference list.

Any film I think is going to be a real cool deal i like to be prepared. Comfortable and late in the evening to avoid interruption.
For the rest on occasion a surprise and generally just to be entertained.
Last film that truly surprised me was "Ironclad" A couple of minor points but a film that made me sit up and not take a leak till it was over.
