Hi,
I have been file-sharing since the mid nineties, since before Bram Cohen blessed us with the BitTorrent protocol, and thought I was reasonably knowledgeable about the protocol.
I am partial to µTorrent, almost always use that.
I very much like to be a well-behaved pirate and always seed until the ratio is at least 2 to 1.
I leave my PC on for days at a strech and figure I might as well be uploading and contributing to this great idea of P2P networking while online.
However, for some time now my u/l speeds as reported by µTorrent have been very low and I have sometimes been forced to quit at a negative ratio.
I am concerned because what goes around...etc and in the long run I can't reasonably expect to receive if I don't give, can I.
I have never throttled u/l speeds in the µTorrent client and have reinstalled it several times to make sure that that has not happened by
mistake.
Can anybody clue me in as to why almost nothing uploads? |

maybe no one wants what you are offering.if your client is set up properly you'll seed automatically unless there isn't any one to take it. |

VenusAndMars, don't worry too much. What goes around comes around indeed but as Nephilim has stated nobody needs ATM.
Personally i choose to seed the more obscure titles as a title that everyone wants already has enough seeders out there. Just do not listen to the whiners in the comments. The pls seed blah blah is generally people that just have no patience. Happy hunting and pop into the forums a little more often
It is surprisingly good fun here. |

some firewalls routers antivirus prevent quick uploads, but you probably have your listen port forwarded if you have been around that long.
maybe its your ISP, or maybe its just lack of leeches. |

You could try checking Speedtest.net... That will tell you what your overall upload speeds should be, and so give you an idea of what you should be expecting when seeding...
There are times when I seed things that should be seeded fairly quickly, even considering my slow upload, but because there are already so many other seeds, it takes forever just to reach an equal ratio... |

Grab one of the new movies, one that is bound to be popular, see if that uploads ok. Tell us which one you are downloading and I'm sure others will download the same torrent and report back upload speeds. |

Yes, I'll be around more often. It's just that last time when I posted somebody made sarcastic fun of my choice of language. That was more 'fun' than I could stand just then, and it kind of turned me off for a while.
You say "...nobody needs ATM". What's ATM stand for?
@rasungod:
yes, I have had my listen port forwarded, and the firewalls (Windows7 and AVG) are not the problem.
See, whenever I run into difficulties I make a point of checking out every possible reason for the problem before I post so as to save everybody time and trouble.
I guess nephilim is right: there aren't that many takers. Yet I have always had eclectic tastes, it's nothing new, but the ratio issue is.
Still if you guys say it's nothing to lose sleep over, I guess that's so.
Thanks for replying. |

I know you don't, I just thought that in distributed networking, as opposed to where you have one server and clients tapping in to that sever, we were all servers/clients and thus wanted to be a good sport.
It's not that I'm looking for rewards or anything, being able to connect to Isohunt, Pirate Bay, Demonoid or wherever is reward enough for me.
File sharing is a great thing I think and I wanted in my humble way to do my bit toward keeping the P2P scene healthy, that's all, and I thought the reason some sites did keep track of ratios was to discourage freeloading and encourage sharing.
I had made these assumptions and it now turns out I don't have to think about it after all. Who knew. |

No worries V&M. Its good to have an attitude as you have as many do just leech and run.
Thing is when uploading it can be quite sporadic. I have had linux live cd as a seed a while back and often it would sit for hours even days with no real action. Then suddenly i am ulpoading at 300kb/sec and often after only 10 or 12 MB's it stops again.
I think the issue is that if its available to a downloader at a faster rate from an alternative source then it takes it from there. |

Thanks for seeding, or trying to seed, it is indeed essential for file sharing. |
