hi guys hope this in the right place. im not sure if it is a problem with my laptop but i cant download srt files for movies anymore. i used to be able to and play them fine. i dont think iv installed anything lately other than the ip filter. i have ran a virus and spyware scan and ran tune up utilities plus defragmenting all disks/drives. i downloaded the thing 2011 r5, the comments says it has small parts in Norwegian which it does...more than a few words so tried to dl the specific file which was given in a link on a comment on the same film. i tried but it always opens in my default player, i tried other sites and its the same thing. have watched half the film but came across even more non english parts so turned it off. has anyone else ever had this problem? is it my comp? or just the files for this particular film. any help will be appreciated.......

are you saying the subtitles arent playing despite having the srt file download? Or that you cant download the srt file?

srt files only work with certain formats i believe. Llike avi. Maybe only avi, not 100% sure. But they dont work with some formats like mkv i think.

Also make sure srt file named exactly same as avi file your trying to play.

ah okay. Are you trying to download from a torrent, or is it from a subtitle site somewhere? Maybe post a link to where your downloading it from?

srt will work with anything,avi,mp4,mkv,just use the link given on that file (and you've been here long enough to know to give a link to the movie file here so others are capable of checking it and the srt link out).go to podnapsi, click download subtitle, you should be given the option to save or open with winrar (you need this or 7zip or something to extract the subs,or click save then go to where you saved it and extract it there),allow it to open, when it opens drag it into the folder with the movie and it should load automatically when you start the movie so long as both are named the same.

apologies i didnt give a link as i thought it was th e only r5. its this one

https://ca.isohunt.com/torrent_details/356041353/the+thing?tab=summary

i was trying to dl from the link provided in the comments, but like i say i tried other sites, ill have to look into setting the file association LORD!GARTH!

neph will give that a go when all is calm in this mad house. never had a problem before so its a wee bit strange. will post on this when iv tried

edit- tried it neph but like i said its the actual downloading thats the problem. as soon as i hit download subtitle it immediately opens in vlc, then it takes a while to shut it down for some reason. i have googled btw but its mostly all about how to play the files, some help on dl them but nothing on my problem

edit 2- i meant to say that when i hit download it does seem to open /dl. i get the arrow appearing as its starting to come down but this lasts less than .5 of a second then vlc opens Question

do you have winrar or 7zip.it's trying to open in vlc because either you don't have what you need or you've set it to or something you've installed (maybe a VLC update) told to open zip files with it.another reason i don't like vlc is because it gets into everything and does this sort of stuff.

Just a thought
'Undo' vlc as your default player and try to download them again

these kinda problems are why i never set any app to be a default anything. It takes a little longer to open things up, if u kant dragndrop a file in, but that suits me fine, its not for everyone but thats how i roll.

insert 1

if your willing to uninstall VLC thats a gorilla with a crowbar solution to determine if VLC is the problem, go for it

not rambling mate, i think your right. i only use vlc as its what im used to (before i knew codecs even existed lol) wmp does seem to always produce a better picture. its funny though cause i uninstalled vlc to dl the srt but couldnt play it with the movie, obviously its just a case of working it out as im not used to it but i ended up dl vlc again Rolling Eyes Shocked
i wont set it as default though and will uninstall again if i encounter any probs......thanks again guys
