Had a bent corner pin situation recently. Found the suggestion of using a plastic credit card helpful:

I'm sure I placed the CPU right - with that little gold corner over the little triangle. Put some of the thermal compound. Put the heat sink on exactly the way the other computers had it. Turned it on and the fans came on but it didn't boot up. It also wouldn't shut down.

Any ideas what I could have done wrong, or did I simply get a bad CPU?

reset the board:
there is a little watch battery on the mobo, pull it out(with PC unplugged of course), for 30 sec, put back in. Then turn on PC and enter bios page, can you now access your bios?

Remember at this point we dont want to boot PC, just access bios page

I removed the battery and put it back in and got the same results. My friend gave me the boot disc to see if it would boot off that, same results. I switched some of the cables just incase something was wrong with any of the cables. It still didn't boot up and would not shut off.. I had to shut the power off with the switch on the power supply.

Is there anything else I could try or am I just dealing with a dead CPU?

so when you turn on pc, it will say press XX(often del or f2) to enter setup. unplug your hard disks for now, just try to access the mobo bios. No use in proceeding until we have done that.

I can't get to that point. I have a blank screen, nothing, not even a blinking light.

If this this the same machine you verified the components with your buddies machine, ie the video card and ram ect. then I would say either you got something plugged in just a bit crooked or possible bad board or cpu. Would it be possible to take some good pics and post them up. Maybe something amiss we can see visually.

Not the same machine. I had 2 machines go down at the same time - one was the motherboard. That one with everyone's help and a replacement motherboard is fixed and I'm using this right now, the other my friend decided to take the fan and heat sink off and the CPU stuck to it. He tried to put it back in with it still stuck and bent the pins breaking one trying to fix it, almost in the same spot that I did when the replacement came with bent pins.

Anyway, this is another replacement CPU. I will take a picture and attach it.

I've finally gotten back to this machine. I took a couple pictures of this one. (Pardon the yellow. My camera sometimes reflects yellow depending on the light.) I'm hoping someone might see if I've missed something. (This is the first time I've posted any pictures to this site or used a site like Photobucket - sorry they came out so big. Embarassed I'll do better next time.)

I'm not sure what to do - I checked to see if enough power was getting to the hard drive by hooking it up to the power portion of a sata/ide to usb 2.0 adapter - nothing. I switched out the sata cord with another one that I know works and still nothing. I can't check bios or anything like that because I get a blank screen. When I turn it on, the power button will not shut it off no matter how long I hold it. I end up turning off the power with the switch on the power supply (not a good thing). I'm not really sure what I should be focusing on to find out what is the problem. Confused I keep thinking it could be the CPU, but would a bad cpu prevent the on/off button from working properly?

Try a known working cpu, if that fails your mobo is shot. also if the board has onboard video remove the card and try that.

Have you pulled this board from the case, or is all the wiring the same just the cpu removed? Definitely try it without the video card in, and I would lose the floppy drive? Laughing The link below has all you need for your wiring and jumpers. I would reset the comos as well.

PS. your pics aren't too big, and the yellow is because your white balance setting, incandescent lights make yellow unless you change it. Wink

Did all that and even bought another cpu incase the first replacement was bad. I was really hoping to get it working. Could the motherboard have died in the time between when the running cpu was removed and damaged and the time I put in the first replacement, or could I have done something wrong while puting in the replacement?

I was planning to give this one to my friend who's computer died for temporary use until a new one was built. Her son built her another computer and it died too. Both had older parts then this one I'm trying to fix except for the hard drive. He had put a 40gig (I thing I have it right) hard drive with windows 7 and droped it off before knowing if it worked. It froze up as soon as it was turned on and went down hill from there. Can that same hard drive be used and a new computer be built around it. I mean build a computer and use that hard drive instead of buying a new one? Because the motherboard would be different, am I right in thinking that it would have to be reformated to fit it? I forget if it's SATA or IDE.

My friend is an older lady of 80 on social security and on a very tight budget. Because a great deal of her world revolves around her computer, I was rushing with this one to get it fixed. I do realize some of you would say wasting my time trying to fix it, Wink but I have more time then money to waste. If it's for me I can tinker around learning the in's and outs and spending $10 or $20 on replacement parts and call it a day but it's now for a friend and that changes everything.

O.K. that said, I use newegg to get anything computer related. When both of my machines were built, all the parts were in the process of being discontinued in favor of new models. What do I look for when looking at computer parts for my friend so a year or two down the road she can still buy parts if needed? She can't afford much and unfortunately I can't afford to buy it for her, Sad as much as I would like to. She's not a gamer or anything like that, she has her religious sites and a few video links, and a few simple cd's and paltalk, simple stuff. I will put together a list from newegg. Let me know what looks good, or bad or if I'm even doing this right.

Thanks for all the help. I'm thankful every day that I found this site. You guys have been so helpful and I have learned so much. I know I have a long way to go, but I'm further along then I would have been. Very Happy

(edited)
O.K. here's what I looked at so far:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131813

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211409

The motherboard doesn't have an on board video, and I don't know where to look for the right type of power supply. Newegg has a deal with the motherboard and cpu combo that runs $13 less. We have many drives that are maybe a couple years old or newer - would that be ok to put in instead of buying 2 new ones? She has a new keyboard and mouse and I gave her my new speakers (2 months old). She also has a new screen.

Am I on the right track above and could I be doing better? I need to do the best I can with as little money as possible and I feel like I'm missing something. Yea, I am - the video card. Embarassed I don't even know what I'm looking for there. What would be the best option for someone that doesn't play video games?
