There was a news post that I lost the URL to, explaining why so many torrents are slowing down and such.
The gist of it follows:
Quote:
The MPAA and RIAA, as well as various other organizations are connecting to torrent trackers and are feeding bogus information to clients. this information is downloaded by the clients, but is discarded for not matching hashes.
This in turn slows down torrents because users do not get the required pieces, and can not seed them as well

something like that Smile

anyways, you can prevent this with the utorrent ( http://utorrent.com/ ) client and this file http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz .

All you need to do is copy nipfilter.dat.gz to
%AppData%/utorrent/ipfilter.dat
then open utorrent, open preferences (ctrl + p) > advanced > set ipfilter.enable to true and click ok.

You're set after that.

This file blocks those IP addresses from connecting, which not only prevents you from downloading bogus data, but also (to an extent) stops them from watching your traffic.

a more realistic way to do this would be to move that file to your hosts file, but i haven't come up with a way to change that file to the right format (someone wanna do that for me? Twisted Evil )

Edit: This file is from http://bluetack.co.uk and they supposedly update it fairly often, so check back there sometime

Edit again: Slap me if i shouldn't have stickied this. people were pm'ing me about it, figured it's actually useful *shrug*

Added "None" option to the poll. Mainly because this fits me. Laughing Not a one has slowed down because of screwy discarded data.

Will this work with Bittorrent Client or do I have to switch to UTorrent Client to use this IP screening tool? I assume that UTorrent is just as good as Bittorrent and they operate in much the same way?

Cheers for the info.

I do not know if this works with bit torrent, but you should switch to utorrent for more reasons than this file.

it's all around smaller and faster and more useful.

The Version of Utorrent 1.6 this is new to me, as i allways have used Azureus, Does any1 know if Utorrent has allways been this small?,
Its just a bunch settings located within User directory? and it seems to have No-program files to speek of? is this usual? or do i have a standalone or somin?
Because...Getting to the point, i had to locate and put the dat file (nipfilter.dat).. within Uttorrents system directory found in application data, of which is usually hidden,
So unless you know what you doing a little, then i would advise not to bother, but if you can work that one out, Utorrent is a fast and excellant Program

The utorrent files are in a hidden folder in the Documents and Settings folder.

A better way instead of using the ipfilter.dat (may not be updated etc) is to use Peer Guardian 2..

the whole purpose of ipfilter.dat is that it is not another app, or a plugin. it's already integrated into the client, you just need the text file.

OK I'm a bit confused here (I only started using utorrent a few days ago and I'm a complete newbie to this) although I did know about the ipfilter.dat before I saw this thread (I did go through the utorrent FAQ) but when I looked in the %appdata%/utorrent folder there was no file with that name there although I do think that it has to be user created but I am a bit confused about the whole copy the file to a file bit or do I just have to rename the file itself when I download it and put it where it should be.

just download nipfilter.dat.gz, extract it and copy it to ipfilter.dat in %appdata%/utorrent
you are correct, the file does not exist until you put it there

Hi Valect, I really appreciate this little ditty Idea as my download speeds have indeed become agonizingly slow..while upload speeds clip right along. I am not sure exactly how to apply your wisdom tho. If you have a moment could you tell me please just what the process is of getting this file onto the list manager of peerguardian? I seem to fumble the ball each time, getting messages that the url is wrong or not having it be recognized in one way or another. also how exactly do I put it onto utorrent? so many thanx from a noobe Very Happy , U

I don't use peergaurdian, so I haven't the slighest clue, however, the utorrent ipfilter.dat and the list peer gaurdian uses are maintained by the same people, so I assume they are the same lists.

If you still want to get the list in utorrent, just follow the instructions I posted. It's fairly straight forward.
