You have another partition on the hd. During the install under advanced options you have the option to delete other partitions.
Tha'ts probably just your old os, but you may be in luck that maybe a recover partition and if so you can restore you computer to it's original settings.

Try Linux and if you feel that your computer is really weak then go for Xubuntu http://xubuntu.org/
If your PC started to make problems even with Xubuntu then something got to be wrong in the PC.. |

No I dont think it can be a recovery partition as my netbook didnt come with any OS, it looks like an old OS you are right but why is it still there and why doesnt drive X or E show up in windows? I even checked it out in cmd but it said there is no drive x. |

Tried linux one time and became more computer illiterate than my grandmother... am going to get a new external hd in a few days, move off all my important stuff and remove every partition from the harddrive so theres nothing there and try that.... otherwise im really stuck. Seriously how can it be the same problem on xp and 7???? doesnt make any sense |

That's what it sounds like to me. It definitely sounds like some kind of intermittent hardware fault going on. Most likely your hard drive is the problem.
You should run a hard drive test program to check for faults while you can. I can't recall any names to recommend but google "hard drive test" and you'll find a load of free programs that should, hopefully, pin point your problem. You may even have a test program built into your bios that will do the job.
If it passes the hard drive test try a memory (ram) test then a mainboard test. It's unlikely that it is ram or mainboard but you never know...
Just remember that you have an older computer, if you have to replace the hard drive try to find a second hand drive. It's always a risk repairing an old machine as you never know when it will fail completely. It may even be a better option to purchase a second hand laptop.
Good luck with it, I hope you can work something out, there's nothing worse than having to use a faulty computer. |

something smells fishy here.
I'm guessing you didn't drive there and buy it?
5,000 miles is a long way to buy that. |
