as iamnephilim said, isohunt is only a search engine (a database of links to where the torrent file is)
and you can't get a virus from a link
no let the program finish it's scan

yeah that's why both iamnephilim and I said straight up to go with a format and new install
killing virus's is time consuming and you don't know if you have actually got it yet |

people are responsible for what they do and cause their own problems by not checking things first and downloading shady stuff.
this site has nothing to do with that,it's merely a search engine (think google). |
Oh, no! You totally misunderstood me and I do check stuff out. My question implied a second question - what could be the sources of all this?
Besides, I've been here for a few years, and this mayhem started fairly recently. |

Hehehehehe. Seriously though if other people use your computer viruses can come from anywhere, more so if they are dumb computer users |

Well, I followed everyone's advice, plus ran ComboFix and finished with Kaspersky. It doesn't find anything any longer but the computer is still screwed up. I can't even run sfc /scannow through the command prompt.
So, I thank you all very much, and stubborn or not, seems I will have to wipe the hard drive and listen to your initial advice - do a clean install...
Maybe I should ask you guys, privately, about some "stuff" I'll be losing... |

why has a 45 min reinstall job turned into a week long thread? Reinstall windows, thats the only valid advice here. How much of your live are you intent on wasting because you dont want to take 45 mins to reinstall your OS?
You say you have tried everyones advice, but the only valid suggestion in this thread so far has been to reinstall, and it was made by multiple users.
turn on your laptop and start tapping F11, follow the instructions, /end thread. |

Hmm, I didn't know you were my long-lost (second) father.
I didn't waste my li
F
e, I've actually learned many useful and interesting things through this process.
I met quite a few nice, fun people right here.
Is anyone holding a gun to your head and saying "You're going to read this thread over and over and over, or else there'll be hell to pay!!!", making you suffer through this "week-long thread"?
I might have reasons for not wanting to reinstall my OS, none of which I need to explain to you, even if you are my long-lost father.
If a total stranger (and I promise - you're NOT my long-lost father) annoys you so much, perhaps a little meditation is in order? You can find quite a few excellent links on this site.

No worries sofsof007..........
cbilljones has been here a long time and we are quite used to his bluntness.
Thing is you may have learned a lot but did in fact waste a lot of your own time in attempting to eradicate whilst leaving everything else untouched.
In this respect a week was spent.....not entirley wasted but nonetheless the best advice was taken as the last option.
I would suggest that you spend a few quid on a decent extreme 111 sdcard 16 gig and once you have your system reinstalled make an immediate carbon copy.....ghost...... of your new shiny OS and then a simple future restore if you ever have an issue is a 20 to 30 minute coffee break. |

the option was on the table from the start, for whatever reason you have for wanting to try you did. it's all good, there has been a response to your post at geekstogo if you want to go further.
unfortunately analyze log files from different os is way beyond me, if you don't please let them know.
and remember, create system restore points once in a while. to do that;
clicking the start button, clicking control panel, clicking system, in the left of pane clicking system protection, and again in the pane at the bottom clicking create
prevention is ............... well .............. the easiest option |

Absolutely, gsxr_rider, mea culpa on lack of backup.
To be honest, I still haven't reinstalled the OS. I do have a brand new smaller HP laptop that is fine, thank God, but has nothing on it yet. The older one has a ton of software I have no backup for, and this is why I am so reluctant to wipe the slate clean, literally.
New question:
I was able to copy my documents, plus some program files and a couple of original isohunt downloads, that were still in my download folder. Should I assume most of it is corrupt?
Also, one disk I burned, wouldn't open at all for some reason, so I deem that one kaput, right? |

This is excellent advice, thanks, johnno23. You mean something like this?

documents you created should be fine to move but unless you are sure how or when this virus corrupted you computer,
I would treat "all" executables as suspicious.
I would actually trash the lot and go for new stuff.
if it's that old you may find better files with more reliable comments.
just thought I would mention because the last thing you want is to help the thing move to another pc |

^^Hear hear. You need to do this, you could save so much time and effort by just backing up everything like this....so next time the defecation collides with the propeller, you is ready |

LOL! Somehow your PC paraphrasing sounds a lot worse than the original!
