MediaDefender has always been
a source of much amusement,
but their latest attack on Revision3 just highlights the issue so well. They claim to defend the rights of copyright holders, but just who are they defending when they attack Revision3, a great publisher for online video who
chose
to use BitTorrent to save bandwidth cost in distributing their HD videos? Whether a mistake or not, what MediaDefender does is spam, and spamming should be illegal.

| New search filters, .torrent enclosures in RSS, fixes | Posted by IH on Jun. 1
Time to highlight a few search features, new and old.
First, for the past week or so we've added a new filter
Limit Age within:
on all search results. By clicking the days limits links following it, you can limit your search to show only results within the last X number of days. Very useful if you are looking for something fresh. Here's an example search for
Creative Commons torrents created in the last 30 days.
Note that the Age limit filter, like Sorting by different column, is "sticky" between searches. Your last preference for Age limit and Sorting is remembered by browser cookie. Click "None" for reverting to old default of no limit on age in search results.
And for an old and somewhat hidden feature, some may not realize we do have torrents browsing of the latest by category. You get to it by searching with an empty phrase, or click
Browse All Torrents
placed on every search results page. On there you can browse latest torrents per category, sorted by Age (since torrent was created) or Popularity (seeds). With the new Age Limit filters, you can browse by say, "The most popular books in the last 7 days". Poke around and see what new torrents you discover!
For RSS search feeds, that's a feature that's been around for a long time (isoHunt was perhaps the first to have this). What we didn't have was direct links to .torrent files that you can use in torrent subscription clients such as
Miro,
and other BitTorrent clients have have RSS support. Now you do, with standard RSS enclosures in addition to links to torrents' details pages as before. Try searching for something on isoHunt, and copy the RSS url (from the RSS button in your browser, or the orage RSS button on top left of search results pages) for subscribing in your client.
A bug popped up today with comments and flags on torrents, where comments and flags doesn't show after initial posting. It was a combination of new code and database server we brought online today, the bug is now fixed. Also expect more uptime now our databases are back to normal (ya, you may have seen the
Series of Tubes Music Video
a little more often than you should the last week  )
Now, another feature we've been looking at implementing (but didn't) is suggestions dropdown on search, like
Google Suggest
(type something in the box). One reason for not implementing is it overrides forms autocomplete that comes with your browser, and possibly some Javascript performance issues with slower computers/browsers. So I'm attaching a poll with this post. Vote Yes or No for search suggest on isoHunt, after you've seen how it works on Google Suggest.

The
China earthquake has been widely reported
so I won't reiterate the details. At
20,000 dead and 80,000 missing,
there are a lot of trapped people that needs help, and families affected.
Myanmar's cyclone
seems even worse, and even more unfortunately, most of foreign aid to Myanmar
is blocked.
There are indeed many tragedies happening, many of which is just another newsflash. But I hope you do take the time and read the reports and images from around the Web o these events to appreciate the devastation and magnitude of how many people are affected.
For a little perspective in death tolls, both are about 10 times worse than either 9/11 or Katrina.

UPDATE (June 4):
I figured waiting for June 12 to send the funds is too long, and instead sent donations we received from April 1 to May 31 instead, compensated by an extra month of donations received before the disasters. That came out to be $2798.41 USD, donated to the Salvation Army. I still don't see Burma loosening up acceptance of foreign aid, so I designated the funds for the China earthquake. To all who donated, whether through us or directly to the above charities, thanks! Disaster don't care about politics or nationality, and your donation shows that.
Update 2: FYI, as posted
here, the The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is matching donations made by individual Canadians to qualified charities.
I donated $2800 as Canadian so that qualifed. To all Canadians, a good fact to know. Other countries probably has similar donation matching as well, google it and check.
