Debunking torrent "meta" search engines
Posted by IH on Dec. 13
I noticed more and more so called "meta-search engines" are popping up. They either work by sticking isoHunt and other sites with search facility in a frame, or attempt to parse results from isoHunt and other sites and merge them to 1 page of search results. For those of you who think you are getting more bang for your search from them, know that we already index every site most meta search engines would care to include . We actually index and add tracker cross-referencing, so not only do you get much faster search results, you get additional trackers for each torrent.

To avoid blowing my own trumpet too much, here's the experience of a blogger searching on various torrent sites, including isoHunt . You can do the same. I'd really welcome some more in depth comparison on the depth and quality of our search results with other sites. If you do, please do reply and link under this.

And ya, Merry Christmas everyone! Wink

Changelog
Haven't updated in a while on what's changed on isoHunt, so here's a list.

Changelog wrote:
Smarter query parsing. One example is now you can do a query like so: "candy blue OR green" without brackets. Queries without boolean operators are all required terms, just as before and what you would expect from Google and elsewhere.

Bigger index

Faster torrent scrapes (much faster). Completely revamped backends means we can scrape increasingly more seed/leecher stats (22+ million peers and going), while stats update up to every hour.

Full internationalization (almost anyways). You should have noticed we've been indexing non-english sites for a while, but recently I've added proper charset detection and conversion so you can search using European and Asian characters, and results would turn up without funny characters. I know there's a few Chinese blogs linking here, so yes, we index Chinese sites, and you can now search in Chinese.

Spellcheck, related searches everywhere

Pretty urls (like http://isohunt.com/torrents/<query>)

Tweaked isoHunt Rank

FIXED: problems with uploads and torrents getting mysteriously banned
and as a corollary, smarter filtering on fakes and "bad" torrents without banning what shouldn't have been banned. Automatic filters are always a guessing game though, so report on what's wrong here and here .

db's hamsters doubled!
Posted by SecretSquirrel on Oct. 27
our db box, since it couldn't handle all your tubes, has had it's hamsters replaced, by new shinier, dual-core hamsters... sorry about the downtime, but given the opportunity to get it done before the weekend 'rush' i got it done...

so, hopefully we'll be safe for a little while longer!

Update by Robbat2: sorry for the weird downtime blips earlier today, but our dual-core hamsters were wearing out the hamster wheels. We've tuned those up as well now, and everything's good.

Update by SecretSquirrel: the motherboard didn't recognize the CPUs, so this last little bit of downtime was due to upgrading the bios on the S2881 in db. since then, instead of 60% SYS per cpu-core, we're at ~5% sys, so loadavg is not a problem anymore, should be smooth sailing until we need more webs again Wink
