This is the comic-strip adaptation of the famous TRIPODS Trilogy by John Christopher (The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, & The Pool of FIre) that originally ran in BOYS LIFE magazine from May of 1981 to August of 1986. The artist was Frank Bolle (Gold Key Comics' DOCTOR SOLAR, Apartment 3-G, much, much more). These comics are very had to come by, and served as my introduction (and millions of other boys my age) to the awesome story of Christopher's TRIPODS story. The trilogy's story takes place on an Earth 200 years after the events of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" - with one slight change... instead of being eliminated by microbes & diseases, the aliens have conquered & ruled over humanity for close to 200 years. Humanity now lives in total, naive and ecstatic adoration of the "Tripods", huge metallic-looking alien creatures, which they people regard as their saviours. They are kept under thought control from the age of 14 by cranial implants called "caps", which leave them with a life of modesty and serenity by preventing curiosity and creativity, not to mention any traces of dissent. But not all is lost... Free Men roam the world disguised as capped traders and the mentally ill, seeking out boys under 14 with rebellious and curious natures, hoping to recruit them for a final battle with the Tripods. Enter our hero, Will, who embarks on a journey of discovery, friendship and horror. This series ran one page per issue of Boy's Life in the 1980's, and getting each chapter one at a time was MURDER. This was the era before Amazon.com and instant gratification, remember... if your local library didn't have it and your local bookstore didn't carry it, you were stuck wondering what would happen from month to month. Thousands of boys now in the late-20's and early 30's were captivated by this great adaptation of John Christopher's great books. Millions more were converted in the U.K. when the BBC adapted the first two books into a live-action television show called "THE TRIPODS" (also commonly available on bittorrent, and a great show for kids & young adults). Supposedl a Hollywood film trilogy is in the works, but everyone knows what that means: either (a) it'll never happen, or (b) they'll murder it. :) Either as nostalgia, or a great example of how books can be convincingly translated to comics or as terrific artwork from Frank Bolle, these are definitely worth reading.
